Campaign themes

2014

Smith answered the following about her campaign in a Q&A with the Dallas Morning News:[1]

Why are you running for this office?
I am running for the LISD School Board Place Six position because I want to help create a strategy to get the parents involved in the decisions the school district is making. I have many parent friends that have found it difficult to get involved with the school district either because of time constraints or not seeing the value in being a part of the district. I want to change parents perceptions of the school district. I want parents to know that LISD needs to hear every parents concerns, praises, and ideas. It truly takes a village to raise a child and LISD needs all parents to contribute so we can take the district to new heights. Every single decision made for the benefit of LISD students needs to be backed with support from as many parents we can reach. I want to advocate for more parent involvement in LISD. Teachers are another reason I am running for place six. We all should be working together to give our students the best possible education so they can succeed anywhere. Our teachers should also be at the forefront of district discussions regarding any new ideas or changes to the classroom curriculum.

Why should voters choose you over your opponent?
Citizens should vote for me because I want to create strategies that will allow parents and teachers to be involved in the conversations regarding the school district. I am fully aware that every parent and teacher are important in the education growth of our students. My thought process while on the board will always be in the mindset of a parent and supportive of our teachers. I will always see the bigger picture, the success of our students.

If elected, what two issues should be given the most attention and resources during your term in office?
1) Technology - I want to take a look at our overall strategy to engage students with technology. We need to bring in the parents and teachers in on the strategy for implementing technology in the curriculum. Technology should be supplemental to the curriculum delivered by the teachers. 2) Parents- I want to take a deeper dive into ways the school district can better engage the parents of LISD. If majority of the parents cannot attend board meetings, then we need to find alternative ways to deliver the information to the missing parents. We, as a LISD community, need to seek out ways to make sure all parents are aware of the conversations happening in their district.

What resources are lacking in schools in your trustee district?
In my observation I believe resources for the parents are lacking in my trustee district. LISD could provide STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) tool kits for parents to engage their child after school, on the weekends, and during the summer. This way children are seeing that education isn't just in the classroom, it’s all around us. [4]
