Should new charter schools be approved in your district? (Not all school boards are empowered to approve charter schools.
In those cases, the candidate was directed to answer the question as if the school board were able to do so.)
Yes. Schools that use public resources should have oversight and transparency. Charters should be held to the same standards of public schools and this includes respecting the wishes of teachers to have input in the operation of the programs.
Which statement best describes the ideal relationship between the state government and the school board? The state should always defer to school board decisions, defer to school board decisions in most cases, be involved in the district routinely or only intervene in severe cases of misconduct or mismanagement.
The state should only intervene in severe cases of misconduct or mismanagement.
Are standardized tests an accurate metric of student achievement?
No. In some cases students are taught to pass the test and not to critically analyze information. Testing should be more individually tailor to students.
What is your stance on the Common Core State Standards Initiative?
We should provided administrators and teachers the resources/training in order to implement the Common Core. The district should also work with parent groups to provide educational sessions and information.
How should the district handle underperforming teachers? Terminate their contract before any damage is done to students, offer additional training options, put them on a probationary period while they seek to improve or set up a mentorship program for the underperforming teacher with a more experienced teacher in the district?
Offer additional training options. Set up a mentorship program for the underperforming teacher with a more experienced teacher in the district. Mentoring in any professional provides a solid foundation for success. Experienced teachers can value to the new generation coming in the the [sic] profession and vice-versa. Even if a teacher has been in the classroom for years, one can benefit from learning new research and evidence base practice models.
Should teachers receive merit pay?
No. I believe merit pay can be a subjective tool of of [sic] bullying used by some administrators. Teachers should be paid based on steps and years of experience/education.
Should the state give money to private schools through a voucher system or scholarship program?
No. The focus should be on strengthening our public systems and supporting our teachers.
How should expulsion be used in the district?
I believe this should be the absolute last resort and look a model of restorative justice within the school system.
What's the most important factor for success in the classroom: student-teacher ratio, the curriculum, teachers, parent involvement or school administration?
Teachers The most important factor in the classroom would be that teachers that is dynamic and synthisizes all these aspects into the classroom: 1. Working in a collaborative nature in order to reach resolutions and solving problems 2. Engaging with parents and keeping them informed 3. Input into curriculum design 4. Having the ability to voice concerns over any issues that impact the classroom such as, student teacher-ratios.
