I am a current Minnetonka School Board member running for reelection. I have 2 children currently in the district, and two recent graduates of Minnetonka High School, and we have lived in the district for 11 years. I am a general surgeon who left practice to enter graduate school and am working on a Ph.D. in Healthcare Informatics (the data science of medicine). I am the son of a Filipino immigrant who also practiced general surgery. Our blended family is: BIPOC, White, and LGBTQIA+. Our children are neurodiverse learners who have utilized a wide range of the district's offerings, including special education services, 504 plans, the MHS Compass program, advanced learner programs, VANTAGE, and Ready-Start Kindergarten. I have a niece and nephew that open-enroll for the immersion program.
  • As a current board member, I have a thorough understanding of the school district's operations, policies and financial situation. I will use this experience to help the district continue to provide an educational experience that is among the best in the nation.
  • During my term as a board member, I have made an effort to look at board decisions and actions through the lens of those who are often not represented, including BIPOC individuals, those in the LGBTQIA+ community, those requiring special education services, neurodiverse individuals, and those with mental health disorders. I will continue to speak for those underrepresented groups so that all students and staff know that they are an important part of our community.
  • I have had over 30 years of formal education, including my current enrollment as a Ph.D. student at the University of Minnesota. My experience as a student and teacher gives me insight as to the needs of students and instructors, especially in today’s technologically-enhanced (and challenging) world. It also guides my understanding that our students all learn differently, and individualized, student-centered instruction is critical to today’s students.
Student health, mental health and safety (I currently serve of the Mental Health Advisory Committee and TonkaCARES -- a coalition of community leaders aimed at addressing substance abuse/addition), embracing diversity in a way that all students benefit and grow in our increasingly diverse society, meeting the academic needs of all students regardless of future vocation, and helping students learn and grow with confidence in an increasingly diverse society.
I believe elected officials should be responsible and accountable to their constituents. They should be open and receptive to input (including criticism), and they should be careful, thoughtful and fair in their judgements. They should be respectful and collaborative with their elected and non-elected colleagues, even in times of disagreement. Lastly, they should be respectful of the past, prepared for the future, but always live in the present.
I am a leader who is fair and thougthful, making decisions after careful examination of the information and issues at hand, seeking additional information when it is needed. Thanks to my training in surgery, I remain cool under pressure and can find solutions in complex situations. Additionally, I am collaborative by nature, seeking input from many levels and willing to compromise to meet common goals.
My first job was as a student athletic trainer for my high school. It lasted my entire high school career and, while it was mostly unpaid, I did get paid for larger events. It undoubtedly put me on the path to becoming a physician, and taught me self-confidence and how to reliably serve others who are depending on you for their health and safety.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, by Douglas Adams. It is a remarkable tale that combines incredible humor and amazing imagination to create a universe that made me laugh out loud one minute and think science was on the verge of bringing the Infinite Improbability Drive (and other fantastical inventions) into existence the next. Plus, if you read the entire 5-book trilogy, you will understand why the answer to Life, The Universe, And Everything is 42, and why Eddie's chesterfield is prancing across a prehistoric meadow...
The school board member's primary job is to, on behalf of their constituents (both in and out of the district), guide the administration of the school district and ensure: a high quality of education, adherence to state and federal statutes, the health and safety of students and staff, and fiscally appropriate and responsible decision making.
I think the diverse needs of the district are best supported by a process that involves carefully identifying those needs and providing for those needs in a way that honors a person's or group's culture and identity. This is best done through open, active, and respectful conversation between the stakeholders and thoughtful (and fiscally responsible) utilization of resources that are either available or can be obtained.
An ideal learning environment for students involves a process that is able to identify the needs of every student on an individual basis, and provide for those needs through a curriculum that is flexible enough to be personalized for each student. This environment would not only allow each student to reach their highest academic potential, but it would help prepare them for their adult life and whatever future careers they might pursue.
