Three seats on the Osseo Area Schools Board of Education were up for general election on November 4, 2014.

Incumbent Jim Burgett ran against challengers Oduwa Aibuedefe Aganmwonyi, Pa Ann, Susan Brown-Whistler, Jessica Craig, Delma J. Francis, Robert Gerhart, Radious Y. Guess, and Collette Guyott-Hempel for the seats. Fellow board members Tammie Epley and Teresa Lunt did not file for re-election.[1] Craig, Gerhart, and Burgett won the open seats.

Osseo Area Schools is located in Hennepin County, Minnesota. The county seat is Minneapolis. Hennepin County had a population of 1,198,778 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau in 2014.[2] In the 2011-2012 school year, Osseo Area Schools was the fifth-largest school district in Minnesota and served 20,917 students.[3]

Demographics

In 2013, Hennepin County had a higher percentage of residents with a bachelor's degree compared to the state overall. The United States Census Bureau reported that 45.8 percent of residents aged 25 and older in Hennepin County had earned a bachelor's degree, compared with 32.6 percent for Minnesota. The county’s median household income was $64,403, above the state median of $59,836. The poverty rate in Hennepin County was 12.8 percent, slightly above the state rate of 11.5 percent.[2]

Voter and candidate information

As of the 2014 election, the Osseo Board of Education consisted of six members elected at-large to four-year terms. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. Three seats were up for election in 2014.[1]

School board candidates had to file with their county elections department during the candidate filing period. The filing period began on July 29, 2014, and ended on August 12, 2014. To vote in the 2014 general election, voters had to register by October 14, 2014.[5][6]

Endorsements

Incumbent Jim Burgett and challengers Pa Ann and Robert Gerhart received an endorsement from the Senate District 34 Republicans of Minnesota.[7] Gerhart also received endorsements from the Senate District 36 Republicans of Minnesota and Osseo City Councilman Mark Schulz.[8]

Campaign finance

Osseo Area Schools does not publish campaign finance reports for school board candidates. State law does not require campaign finance reporting if contributions or expenditures do not exceed $750 in a calendar year.[9]
