I bring over 34 years of experience in education to this role, having served as a Special Education Teacher at Miami-Yoder School for 10 years, a Principal and Special Education Teacher in the Edison School District for 17 years, and most recently, as Student Services Director in the Ellicott School District for 1 year. Additionally, I spent 6 years as a Colorado Department of Education Regional Specialist, where my focus was on assisting Colorado principals in coaching teachers through quality observations and feedback.

My priorities as a candidate are clear: to prioritize students and schools over politics, maintain comprehensive curricula, and secure adequate funding for our schools

I have deep roots in Colorado, having lived here for 51 years, with 33 of those years in El Paso County. I've experienced rural life firsthand, residing on a ranch in Yoder, CO, where I raised cattle, horses, and goats. My family ties to education run deep, as my daughter is also a teacher in Fort Collins. My fiancé is a Colorado Springs native and a graduate of Mitchell.

In my personal life, I am passionate about family, reading and exercise. I enjoy walking my neighborhood and biking throughout Colorado Springs.

I am looking forward to the opportunity to serve students, teachers and parents in this community.
  • Prioritize students and schools over politics. A school board should focus on the issues that matter within the district. National politics should not have a place at meetings. Students should truly be the focus. Common sense decision making and a laser focus should dominate the nightly agenda.
  • I want to secure adequate funding for our schools. We need to understand the funding mechanisms and advocate for better education funding at both the state and federal level. We need to work together with state and local representatives to continue the fight for Colorado to improve on funding schools. We currently rank in the bottom 10% nationwide for funding public education. We need to raise awareness by building support among parents, teachers, and community members that can be so influential.
  • Recruit and retain quality educators: To recruit quality educators it is important to utilize professional networks, be diligent about job postings, and communicate effectively the benefits of working in District 11 schools. To retain a quality staff teachers need to be compensated in a competitive environment. We have to keep up with local districts as well as districts across Colorado. Teachers also need to be valued and heard. Teachers are willing to do the hard work and we need to compensate them for that difficult work.
School funding: Colorado is well below the national average in per pupil spending. We have lost over 10 billion dollars due to the mechanism used in Colorado to balance the budget at the expense of funding education.I will support efforts toward the budget stabilization factor. Boards need to show support to legislators working to remedy the school funding issues.

Access for all students: It is important to enact policies at the district level that allow access to all students. Not all students come to school with the same toolbox. We have students entering school with the skills necessary to succeed. We also have students entering schools that do not have the tools necessary to succeed. It is important for the Board of Education to consider this when deciding on district policies.
Integrity would be the most important characteristic for an elected official. You must be honest and transparent while holding true to your values.

You should also be accountable. There are tough decisions to be made on a school board and you need to stand behind those decisions.

Fairness to all is important. All constituents should be treated equally and free of any bias.

You should be a good communicator. All stakeholders should be communicated with clearly.

Lastly you should be a collaborator. You work within a group of seven and you should be willing and able to work well with your group of board members and the superintendent.
I am a level headed person who solves problems without getting overly involved in the situation. I have had many teachers over the years thank me for keeping myself at an even place and coming toward the problem with solutions.

I have experience as an educator and I am a proven leader. I understand that many people come to the same situation with varying levels of knowledge. I am ready to provide that knowledge when needed and receive that knowledge when needed. My wealth of experience will help a great deal as a board member.

I have been a part of hundreds of board meetings in the districts I worked for. I understand how boards work and I have seen it first hand. I will bring this knowledge to the board and also my ability to solve problems, increase knowledge and use common sense in decision making.
My first job was in our family business while I was going to school to complete my teaching certificate. I was working for my father as an administrative assistant. I worked for him for several years throughout college. He was a tough boss and was demanding and I learned to complete work on time and to do my very best. He ran an insurance agency and I was typing out insurance policies in triplicate. I enjoyed the work and also enjoyed spending time with my dad.
My favorite book is Kite Runner. It is a book about the impact of life events on your overall emotional and physical being. It spoke to me as an educator and as a mom.
The primary job of a school board member is to consider policy development and approval, hire and work with the superintendent, and to maintain a true and accurate curriculum. Many times school boards lose focus and begin to try and navigate national issues that do not have an impact on the everyday school experience of students and teachers. Focusing on policy development and collaboration with the superintendent should be the primary focus of a well-functioning school board. I will encourage this board to focus on the things that really matter.
Good teaching is characterized by an environment that encourages creativity, problem solving and critical thinking. Students need to be prepared for a world that does not exist right now. I will support advanced teaching approaches by making sure teachers and educators have what they need to be successful. Resources are short these days and teachers are being asked to do more with less. We need to trust our educators and empower them to do the job they have been highly trained to do. They need support on a regular basis. We need to engage in job-embedded professional development which has proven to be one of the best investments over the years. This can be best measured by asking the people receiving the training or support in the form of surveys or questionnaires.
The ideal learning environment for students is one in which they feel safe and ready to expand their learning. For many students, school is their safe space. They come to school eager to engage with a community of learners. Learning only takes place when their basic physical and emotional needs are met. If they are hungry, they don't thrive in a learning environment. If they are scared or feel unsafe, they will not thrive. The needs of students should be the most important priority for our school boards.
