Primary: She was successful in the primary on June 10, 2014, receiving 40.7 percent of the vote. She competed against Romeo R. Perez and incumbent Kenneth E. Pollock.
General: She defeated Judge Kenneth E. Pollock in the general election on November 4, 2014, receiving 57.8 percent of the vote.

Hughes received her undergraduate degree from East Central University in 1985 and her J.D. degree from the University of Oklahoma Law School in 1988.[3]

Prior to her election to the bench, Hughes practiced law with the firm of The Dickerson Law Group in Las Vegas, Nevada. She specialized in family, business, labor relations, and civil law.[3]
