Two seats on the Richardson Independent School District board were up for general election on May 10, 2014. In the Place 6 race, Justin Bono defeated challenger Rachel Chumney. In the Place 7 race, Kristin Kuhne triumphed over challengers Bonnie Abadie and Judy Yarbrough.[1]
About the district
Richardson Independent School District is located in Dallas County, Texas. The county seat of Dallas County is Dallas. The county's population was 2,368,139 according to the 2010 U.S. Census.[2]
Demographics
Dallas County underperforms the rest of Texas in terms of median household income and poverty rate but outperforms in terms of higher education attainment. The 2013 U.S. Census found that 28.6 percent of Dallas County residents over 25 years old held undergraduate degrees compared to a 26.7 percent rate for the state of Texas. Dallas County had a median income of $49,481 in 2013 compared to $51,900 for Texas. The poverty rate for Dallas County was 19.1 percent in 2013 compared to a 17.6 percent rate for the rest of the state.[2]

Voter and candidate information
The Richardson Board of Trustees consists of seven members. While members are elected to specific places on the ballot, they serve at large. They serve three-year terms. There was no primary election and a general election took place on May 10, 2014 for two seats. Two seats were on the ballot in May 2015.[4]
A member of the board must be 18 years old, a U.S. citizen and a resident of the district. An individual seeking office must be a resident of the state for 12 months and a resident of the district for six months, prior to the last date on which the candidate could file to be listed on the ballot.[5]

Endorsements
Kristin Kuhne received endorsements from Richardson Mayor Laura Maczka, City Councilmen Steve Mitchell and former board members Bettye Stripling, Ron Hughes and Anne Foster.[6]
Campaign finance
No candidate filed a campaign finance report with the Texas Ethics Commission.[7]

What was at stake?
Two new board members were elected in May 2014 after both incumbents, Kim Quirk and Karen Ellis, decided not to file for re-election. Those seats were filled by newcomers Justin Bono in Place 6 and Kristin Kuhne in Place 7. This election was the first time two new board members joined the board since 2004. A bond election was scheduled for 2016.[4]
