Two seats on the school board for Riverside Unified School District were up for trustee area elections that were held on November 5, 2013. Kathy Y. Allavie defeated Arthur Murray for the Trustee Area 1 seat, while Brent Lee defeated Chuck Beaty for the Trustee Area 5 seat.

Riverside Unified School District is located in Riverside County, California in Riverside, California. As of the 2010 Census, it was home to 303,871 residents.[1]

Demographics

Riverside underperforms the rest of California when measured on the percentage of residents living below the poverty level, percentage of residents over the age of 25 with a high school diploma, percentage of residents aged 25 years and older attained a bachelor's degree and median household income. The median household income in Riverside was $57,555 compared to $61,632 for the state of California. 21.9% of Riverside residents aged 25 years and older attained a bachelor's degree compared to a 30.2 in California. The US Census also showed the poverty rate in Riverside was 15.8% compared to 14.4% for the entire state. The US Census also found that 77.5% of Riverside residents aged 25 years and older attained a high school degree compared to a 80.8% in California.[2]

Method of board member selection

Riverside Unified School District School Board consists of five members, all of whom are elected to four year terms. As of the 2013 election cycle, all board members represent a geographic area of the district. Board member terms are staggered so that at least three members, are to be elected each odd numbered year on the first Tuesday after the first Monday of November. There are no primary elections. Two seats were up for election on November 5, 2013. The three remaining seats were up for election on November 3, 2015.[4]

On November 5, 2013, Kathy Y. Allavie defeated one challenging candidate for the Trustee Area 1 seat on the Riverside Unified School District Board of Education, while Brent Lee defeated incumbent Chuck Beaty for the Trustee Area 5 seat.
