“ | What special qualifications and strengths could you bring to the board?
I have two children in the Fox C-6 School District and have spent my life in the field of education. I am especially focused on the success of our children as I am the first in my family to graduate high school and go on to college. I know the struggles many of our children will face and can help to identify the steps the school board can take to modify the pitfalls our students face as they move through academia. Name your two or three primary goals as a board member. 1) To renew trust in the board as representatives of our community What do you see as the biggest challenges to the board in the next five years? 1) Regaining the community’s trust How do you see the role of the board with administration? With teachers and staff? I believe the board is in place to ensure an administration that stays focused on the education of our children. All the other peripheral issues must remain secondary. The board is responsible for providing a work environment conducive to educating our children. This requires adequate educational material, professional development, access to continuing education, and a safe and secure work place. How can you as a school board member help ensure the consistent enforcement of school board policies? By making sure people are held accountable for their actions. How do you feel about administrative, teacher and support staff salaries and benefits? I would like to see administrative salaries decreased. I know it’s difficult to rollback something already in place, but it is not impossible. Imagine how many books could be purchased if each administrator’s salary was cut by even $10,000 apiece. I believe administrators should be paid according to their position, but as with teachers, the expectation is that they have chosen this profession because of their passion for teaching and the profession, not to gain substantial monetary gain. We send our children to Fox C-6 elementary and secondary schools and we expect our children to be afforded the best education available. How can we expect this to happen if we don’t ensure that we have the best teachers available? I would much rather see a decrease in administrative pay and an increase in teacher’s wages to compensate the teachers for the responsibility and dedication they show to our children. Through their support, the staff at our schools provides a safe and secure place for our children to learn. No school could function; no teacher could hold class without the infrastructure provided by staff. It will be important to ensure that they receive the appropriate salaries and benefits they deserve for their commitment to the district. What do you feel a board member’s responsibility and role in the effective administration of schools? Board member are responsible for oversight - to ensure that the school district adheres to state educational policies, that district funds are spent wisely, and that the board is responsive to student, parent, and teacher concerns. Are there any specific policy or procedural changes that you would like to see put in place should you become a board member? There are several changes I would like to see initiated: 1) More information provided at school board meetings. What is the most important consideration to you when making a board decision or vote? The most important consideration to me is that I have all the accurate information about the issue at hand before I make my decision and be sure to consider the consequences. What is your stance on redistricting boundary lines? I would be more supportive of redistricting if it involved the construction of a new school or schools. With an increasing and shifting population base within a district, redistricting becomes a necessary evil. Regardless of the reason, parents must be consulted and included in the discussion. I would also hope a plan could be designed to let high school students remain at their initial school with a transition period over to the new school. Although initially difficult decisions must be made, the most advantageous outcome will ensure the best educational experience for our children.[3] |
