Two seats on the Rockwall Independent School District board were up for general election on May 10, 2014. Leigh Plagens retained her Place 6 seat in an unopposed race, and Place 7 incumbent Stephanie Adams defeated three challengers to keep her seat.[1]

Rockwall Independent School District is located in Rockwall County, Texas. The county seat of Rockwall County is Rockwall. The county's population was 78,337 according to the 2010 U.S. Census.[2]

Demographics

Rockwall County outperforms the rest of Texas in terms of higher education attainment, median income and poverty rate. The 2010 U.S. Census found that 35.3 percent of Rockwall County residents over 25 years old held undergraduate degrees compared to a 26.3 percent rate for the state of Texas. Rockwall County had a median income of $82,725 in 2010 compared to $51,563 for Texas. The poverty rate for Rockwall County was 6.3 percent in 2010 compared to a 17.4 percent rate for the rest of the state.[2]

Voter and candidate information

The Rockwall Board of Trustees consists of seven members. While members are elected to specific places on the ballot, they serve at large. They serve three-year terms. There was no primary election, and a general election took place on May 10, 2014 for two seats. Three seats were on the ballot in May 2015.[4]

A member of the board must be 18 years old, a U.S. citizen and a resident of the district. An individual seeking office must be a resident of the state for 12 months and a resident of the district for six months, prior to the last date on which the candidate could file to be listed on the ballot.[5]

Unofficial results

Ballotpedia has not collected certified election result totals for this race due to demands from Rockwall County that payment is provided for the information. Of the 82 school board elections in Texas that Ballotpedia covered in 2014, Rockwall County was the only office to refuse to provide accurate election results free of charge. It was one of only two elections out of the 667 school board elections Ballotpedia covered in 2014 where accurate, final election results are not available without charge to the public.
