Campaign themes
2014
Walter’s website highlighted the following campaign themes:[4]
- Jobs:
Excerpt: "Since the recession of 2008 our economy has been struggling. We are replacing Full-time jobs with Part-time jobs and touting economic success. This path is not sustainable. We need to promote pro-growth legislation, legislation that removes government interference and allows our economy to grow in the American Economic and Free Market System of smaller government, less taxes, and fewer government regulations."
- Guns:
Excerpt: "I will protect our Second Amendment rights. As Americans, we have a fundamental right under the 2nd amendment to bear arms to secure a free state. Our government should always act to protect this right and all the freedoms provided by our constitution to 'secure the blessings of liberty for ourselves and our posterity'."
- Natural Resources and Government Regulations:
Excerpt: "President Obama's 'war on coal' is a war on West Virginia's very economy. Holding up permits for mining and over-burdensome emissions regulations are strangling our coal industry and killing jobs in not only the coal industry, but the power industry and small business in coal communities. Natural Gas producers and farmers have also been targeted. The bureaucracy promulgates these regulations with no regard to the economic impact. Stopping this will stimulate the West Virginia economy and create jobs."
- Life:
Excerpt: "As a Pro-life candidate, I believe every life is precious. Life should not be an issue of convenience. We must put an end to late-term abortions and stop government funding of groups like Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest abortion provider. It not only makes good moral sense, it’s responsible fiscal behavior. The government should not be in the abortion business."
- Taxes:
Excerpt: "We need meaningful tax reform. We need a simpler, more competitive, and fairer tax system. This will help us compete internationally to attract business to locate here in the US and West Virginia. It will help small business owners work more effectively and be able to more readily expand and grow. Reforming taxes will help families on fixed income, will help businesses, and will help set a strong foundation for our future here in West Virginia and in the United States."
