Campaign themes

2014

King explained his themes for the 2014 race in an interview with The Sparks Tribune:

What are the important issues to you?

Keep public schools secular. This is the only way to guarantee religious freedom for all students. No school prayer and no theology disguised as science classes.

Reduce school violence, teaching the students non-violent conflict resolution and having faculty and staff be trained to not allow fighting or harassment of any kind. Bullying is cited as cause for school shootings too many times to make it “just kids being kids.” We need to stop the violence before a gun gets involved

Logistical support. It is a crime that school supplies must be paid for by teachers who are already underpaid.

Increased funding to at least the national average. This would require an increase of at least 25 percent and the legislature needs to find a way.

Key Comment: We need to forget about other countries and our standing on some list. Improving our tech base will take care of that non-issue. We need to have students excited about science and technology. We need to have research and development be a worthy endeavor equal to cranking out product at the lowest cost … The three foundations of a well-rounded student are academics, athletics and the arts. No student need excel in all three areas but should have the opportunity to explore all three.
