Valerie Bourquin-Brown
Valerie Bourquin-Brown was a candidate for the District F seat on the Washoe County Board of Trustees in Nevada. She lost election against fellow challengers Veronica Frenkel, Ronald A. King, Rick Saake, Jim Shaw and John Wynn in the primary election on June 10, 2014.
While the board of trustees is a nonpartisan political body, Bourquin-Brown filed with the Nevada Secretary of State as a Republican.
Biography
Bourquin-Brown obtained a B.A. in communications and Spanish from Saint Mary's College of California. She and her husband have two children who have attended district schools.[1]
Bourquin-Brown was involved in an altercation with Kent Vallier, principal at Double Diamond Elementary School, in October 2012. The incident occurred during a private meeting to address recent behavior by her oldest child. Vallier ended the meeting early due to her aggressive tone and witnesses in the office claimed that Bourquin-Brown made threats against staff members. Bourquin-Brown responded that she was upset about the school's inability to create an individualized plan for her son, who has been diagnosed with sensory processing disorder (SPD). She also denied making threats against Vallier or other school personnel during the meeting. In June 2013, a Reno Justice Court judge sentenced Bourquin-Brown to anger management courses, community service and a $250 fine instead of a 30-day jail sentence for harassment.[2]

Campaign themes
2014
Bourquin-Brown explained her themes for the 2014 race in an interview with The Sparks Tribune:
“ |
What are important issues to you? The important issues to me are a transparent budget, special education, Common Core and building a better working relationship between the District and parents. Key Comment: When it comes to capital improvements I am 100 percent for them. I do not agree with more taxes to make this happen. I think before we can talk about funding and capital raising we really need an independent audit to see what is happening with the finances in our district. I would like to look at ways to budget that do not affect teachers’ ability to teach or take away programs for our children. |
