Four of the five seats on the Roswell Independent Schools school board were up for by-district general election on February 7, 2017. The District 1, 3, and 5 seats were up for regular election to four-year terms, and the District 2 seat was up for special election to a two-year term. In her bid for re-election to District 1, incumbent Mona Kirk defeated challengers Timothy Aguilar and Jennifer Stanford. The race for the two-year term in District 2 featured appointed incumbent Nicole Austin and challenger Louis Mestas. Austin won the election. District 3 incumbent Peggy Brewer was defeated by challenger Alan Scott Gedde. In District 5, appointed incumbent Arturo Ibarra was also defeated. Challenger James Edwards won the seat.[1][2]
With all four incumbents facing challengers in 2017, it was possible for the district to add up to four new members to the school board. One new member was elected in the district's 2015 election after defeating an incumbent. Click here for more election trends in the district and the state.

Voter and candidate information
The Roswell School Board consists of five members elected to four-year terms. Elections are held by district on a staggered basis every February of odd-numbered years. Two seats were up for election on February 3, 2015, and four seats—three four-year terms and one two-year term—were up for election on February 7, 2017. There was no primary election.[1][3]
To be eligible to run for office, school board candidates had to live in the boundaries of the school district and be qualified electors of the state. To get on the ballot, they had to file on December 20, 2016. The deadline to withdraw as a candidate was January 3, 2017.[4][5]
To vote in this election, citizens of the school district had to register by January 10, 2017.[5] Photo identification was not required to vote in New Mexico.[6]

Campaign finance
Candidates in the Roswell Independent Schools election did not have to file campaign finance reports. The state only required campaign finance reporting for school districts with an enrollment of 12,000 students or more.[8]

All four incumbents whose terms were up for re-election in the Roswell Independent school board election in 2017 ran to retain their seats, and they all faced at least one challenger. Two incumbents won re-election to the board, and two newcomers were elected.

The Roswell Independent school district is located in Chaves County in southeastern New Mexico. The county seat is Roswell. Chaves County was home to an estimated 65,764 residents in 2015, according to the United States Census Bureau.[9] The district was the eighth-largest school district in the state in the 2014-2015 school year and served 10,445 students.[10]
Demographics
Chaves County underperformed compared to New Mexico as a whole in terms of higher education achievement between 2011 and 2015. The United States Census Bureau found that 18.1 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 26.3 percent of state residents. The median household income for the county was $40,630, compared to $44,963 for the entire state. The percentage of people below the poverty level in Chaves County was 21.1 percent, while it was 20.4 percent statewide.[9]
