Candidate Connection

Sally Derrick participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on April 3, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Sally Derrick's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Continued Development of Comprehensive Program Choices

2) Fiscal Responsibility
3) Increased Community Support[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

Our communities are stronger when our schools are strong and we should work as a district to build on this partnership. I will focus on increasing awareness about the great things happening in our schools and encourage our neighbors to take a more active role in their neighborhood schools. I believe in public schools and the impact they have on our communities. As a school board trustee, I will bring my passion and years of engagement to advocate for our students, staff and taxpayers to ensure that our entire community benefits from quality public schools.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Sally Derrick answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

Our community lost a beloved former school board member with the passing of James Goode earlier this year. James was a true servant of our community and I deeply admired his passion for our schools. James believed that all children mattered and he worked tirelessly to serve our community and our schools. He was a trailblazer in bringing our community together through partnerships with our schools. James’ service to others is an inspiration to me and I hope to carry on his legacy through increasing the relationships between our communities and our schools.[3]
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?
Jamie Vollmer's "Schools Cannot Do It Alone," first inspired me in 2013. In his book, Mr. Vollmer tells the blueberry story. I encourage everyone to google, Jamie Vollmer and the blueberry story.[3]
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
My experience and steadfast commitment to our schools over the past 9 years has given me an in depth understanding of the challenges our teachers and students face and as a taxpayer in our district, I recognize the importance of full transparency in understanding how our hard earned dollars are being spent. I am a lifelong resident of CFB and I believe in our schools and in our community. As a board member, I want to ensure that we are offering all students across our district an equal opportunity for innovative programming and quality schools. I am the only parent in this race who has children currently in CFB schools and I feel I bring this unique perspective to the board.[3]
How would you support the diverse needs of your district’s students, faculty, staff, and community?
CFB is a very diverse district where the majority of students are Hispanic. Our district has embraced diversity and recognizes that all students deserve high achievement regardless of ethnicity. I would like to see our district work in close cooperation between schools, parents, and the community. This is one of the keys to closing the achievement gap. Parent involvement has been proven to have a strong, direct impact on student achievement.[3]
What will you do to build a better relationship with parents in the district? What plans do you have to be inclusive of parental involvement?
Carrollton Farmers Branch ISD is a district that is welcoming of parent involvement. I believe there is always room for improvement when it comes to our children and our schools, no district is perfect. I have had the opportunity to take advantage of many of the opportunities within our district to get involved including through PTA, district planning committees and ambassador programs. Where I see opportunity is in reaching parents who do not readily seek out how to be involved, whether due to a language barrier or because they simply do not know they can and should be involved. I would encourage our local schools and our district to recognize the challenges that they face and to look for opportunities to reach those parents. I believe schools should offer events in both the early morning and later evening so that working parents can attend. I believe we should continue to offer translation services when we identify a population that is a majority at a campus. I have seen first hand the benefit to being a parent who is actively engaged in the education of my children and as a board member I will make it a priority to ensure we can give all parents this opportunity to be actively engaged.[3]
What issues get in the way of quality education? How would you address these obstacles?
Public schools everywhere are lacking resources. What we need to do as public schools is look at our return on investment on those resources. We need to shift resources to where we will see the highest return on taxpayer investment and that has always been and will always be student achievement As a school board trustee, I would like to review our process of evaluating how spending adjustments (in either direction) are impacting our goal of high achievement for each student. Once student achievement is there, the other objectives fall into place.[3]
