Campaign themes

2014

Cann's campaign website highlights the follow campaign themes:[3]

  • Economic Fairness & Jobs
Excerpt: "As a legislator, Sam Cann knows that nothing is more important to the people of West Virginia than a strong, vibrant economy that will continue to create good paying jobs, giving our children the choice to live and work in their home state. Sam voted to increase the minimum wage and to cut taxes by over $400 million for our working families and businesses to generate more quality jobs and paychecks to support a family."
  • Energy & Natural Resources
Excerpt: "Coal has been the life-blood of West Virginia’s economy for generations and it will continue to play an important role for a long time to come. For that reason, Sam has fought to expand clean coal technology and has urged the EPA to adopt reasonable, consistent and attainable standards for coal mining that will protect both our environment and our jobs."
  • Veterans
Excerpt: "Sam has always believed that we should do more than show our patriotism on Memorial Day and Veterans Day, so during the legislative session in 2000, he was honored to introduce legislation, with his fellow delegates, for funding to build the first veteran’s skilled nursing facility in West Virginia. As a result of our work, a special Veteran’s Instant Lottery ticket was created and it has generated just over 11 million dollars for this state-of-the-art facility for West Virginia’s heroes!"

2012

Cann's website highlighted the following campaign themes:

Economy

  • Excerpt: "Sam Cann has also been instrumental in this effort by sponsoring legislation to diversify the economy including: research into the use of WV coal for alternative fuels, investment in infrastructure and the building of private and public partnerships to improve recreation facilities. But perhaps, some of Sam’s most significant accomplishments have been his work with Graftech International in Anmoore that resulted in expansion of the facility, adding 60 new manufacturing jobs and his strategic involvement with other community leaders in obtaining a viable use for the soon-to-be vacant United Hospital Center."

Healthcare

  • Excerpt: "banning the practice of partial-birth abortions, creating a medical co-pay program for inmates, Increasing the criminal penalties for persons who obstruct, flee from or make false statements to law-enforcement officers and establishing procedures and criteria for the speedy payment of claims by health insurers."

Scorecards

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
