April 10, 2019: The Titanic departed from Southampton, England, on its ill-fated voyage 107 years ago today, April 10, 1912.[1]

The ship left port with 2,240 people on board but only enough lifeboats for 1,178. That flaw became apparent just four days later when an iceberg gouged a 300-foot gash in the ship’s hull. Due to the chaos surrounding the sinking, many of the seats on lifeboats were not filled and only 705 people survived.

The sinking of the supposedly unsinkable Titanic “has taken on a deeper, almost mythic, meaning in popular culture.” History.com reports that “many view the tragedy as a morality play about the dangers of human hubris.”

Each weekday, Scott Rasmussen’s Number of the Day explores interesting and newsworthy topics at the intersection of culture, politics, and technology.
