April 23, 2019: The United States Air Force invests $5.6 million to train an F-16 fighter pilot and $10.9 million to train an F-22 pilot.[1]
A Rand Corporation study found that training bomber pilots is also expensive. It requires $7.3 million to train a B-1 pilot and $9.7 million to train a B-52 pilot.
Training a transport pilot is less expensive, but a C-17 pilot still requires $1.1 million to prepare for the job.
U.S. airlines are facing a pilot shortage and recruiting military pilots in an aggressive manner. The Air Force is seeking ways to retain more pilots after making such a significant investment.
