January 14, 2019: Sixteen percent (16%) of Americans would like to move permanently to another country. That’s the highest total ever measured by Gallup and represents more than 50 million U.S. residents.[1]

However, it’s about average in a global sense. Fifteen percent (15%) of people around the world would move permanently to some other country if they had the chance.

And the number one destination desired by people around the world remains the United States. Among all those who would like to live in some other country, 21% would like to move to the USA. That’s a total of 158 million people. No other country is desired by even one-third of that total.

Five other countries are the dream home for more than 30 million people each—Canada, Germany, France, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

Each weekday, Scott Rasmussen’s Number of the Day explores interesting and newsworthy topics at the intersection of culture, politics, and technology.
