March 14, 2019: In 2004, there were more than 9,000 Blockbuster Video stores in the world. They rented out movies on what now seem like the ancient technologies of VHS and Betamax tapes. The company employed 84,000 workers, more than Google does today.
Now, however, there is just one Blockbuster Video store left, and it’s located in Bend, Oregon.[1] The next-to-last Blockbuster store was located in Perth, Australia, and is closing this month.
Blockbuster was unable to survive challenges from DVD-by-mail competitors and eventually from Netflix and streaming services. The company declared bankruptcy a decade ago, and there were 1,700 stores left when Dish Network bought the company in 2011. Five years ago, there were still a few hundred stores left.
