March 22, 2019: According to the National Venture Capital Association, a total of 8,948 venture deals received $130.9 billion from investors in 2018. That’s a 58% increase from the year before and the highest level ever recorded.[1]
Sixty-two percent (62%) of all that money went to firms and people on the West Coast. Another 25% went to mid-Atlantic states and New England. That obviously doesn’t leave much for the rest of the country.[2]
The Midwest received less venture funding than any other region—just half of one percent (0.5%) of the total.
