March 27, 2025: There are 52 state supreme courts in the United States and 344 state supreme court justices.
There are 52 state Supreme Courts in 50 states because Texas and Oklahoma have separate courts for civil and criminal appeals.
There are several ways across different states that supreme court justices are selected. Some examples include through elections, gubernatorial appointments, commission nominations, and state legislative elections. At the moment, eight states have partisan supreme court elections, and 13 have nonpartisan ones. The most recent state to have partisan elections was Ohio in 2021.
