October 11, 2018: Fifty-three percent (53%) of voters either have never heard of Susan Collins or don’t know enough about her to have an opinion.[1]
Senator Collins (R-Maine) was widely considered to be the decisive vote in the confirmation battle over now-Justice Brett Kavanaugh. The political world held its breath waiting for her decision and intensely watched her lengthy speech when she announced her decision to support Kavanaugh.
The data from a recent ScottRasmussen.com national survey contained additional evidence of how little-known the pivotal senator is to most voters. Among those with an opinion of her, voters are split evenly between those with a favorable view and those with an unfavorable assessment. That has been true throughout the confirmation process. However, when Collins was undecided, Democrats had a more favorable opinion of her than Republicans. Once she decided to support Kavanaugh, the partisan assessments flipped. This suggests that voters had little knowledge of Collins beyond her vote on this one topic.
The poll found even lower name recognition for other senators who were considered undecided during much of the Kavanaugh confirmation process. Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) is unknown by 62% of voters nationwide, Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) by 63%, Senator Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.) by 70%, and Senator Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.) by 72%.
