“ |
A BALLOT MEASURE TO INCREASE THE TRANSIENT OCCUPANCY TAX TWO PERCENT CITYWIDE Measure P has been placed on the ballot by the City Council of the City of South Lake Tahoe. This measure proposes to increase the current transient occupancy tax (hotel tax) by two (2) percent citywide. This will result in a tax rate on hotel occupancy of twelve (12) percent in most of the City and fourteen (14) percent in the redevelopment area. The increased revenue generated by this increase shall only be used to fund recreation facilities and operations, specifically designating as the first priority the construction of a recreational complex as set forth in the adopted Recreational Masterplan. Because this is a special tax (limited to being spent only on the purpose designated), it will require a 66 and 2/3% vote in favor in order to be enacted. The tax will only be paid by people who rent properties subject to the transient occupancy tax. These properties include: hotels, motels and vacation home rentals. Financial Impact The tax is estimated to generate approximately Two Million dollars ($2,000,000.00) annually. Effect of the Measure A “Yes” vote will increase the Transient Occupancy Tax by two (2) percent citywide. A “No” vote will not increase the Transient Occupancy Tax.[2] |
