Three seats on the Vineland Board of Education were up for general election on November 4, 2014. The candidate filing deadline was July 28, 2014.

Incumbents Eugene Medio, Diamaris Rios, and Tom Ulrich all had expiring terms, but Ulrich did not run for re-election. Medio and Rios were joined on the ballot by Kimberly L. Codispoti, Sean R. McCarron, Joseph Pagano, Anthony Rizzo, and Jason Scalzi. Codispoti, Pagano, and Scalzi ran as a slate.[1] Rios, Codispoti, and Pagano were elected in the general election.

Vineland Public Schools is located in Cumberland County, New Jersey. The county seat of Cumberland County is Bridgeton. In 2013, Cumberland County was home to approximately 157,332 residents, according to estimates by the United States Census Bureau.[2] In 2011-2012 school year, Vineland Public Schools was the 19th-largest school district by enrollment in New Jersey and served 9,734 students.

Demographics

In 2012, Cumberland County had a lower percentage of residents with a bachelor's degree compared to the state overall. The United States Census Bureau reported that 14.0 percent of residents aged 25 and older in the county had earned a bachelor's degree, versus 35.4 percent for New Jersey. The median household income in Cumberland County was $51,530, below the state median of $71,637. The unemployment rate in the county was 16.1 percent, compared to 9.9 percent statewide.[2]

Voter and candidate information

As of the 2014 election, the Vineland Board of Education consisted of nine nonpartisan members who were elected at-large to three-year terms. Candidates for the Board of Education must be 18 years old and have resided within the district for at least one year before their election or appointment. There are no term limits.

Candidates were required to submit nominating petitions with 10 signatures to the county clerk by the filing deadline on July 28, 2014. The general election was held on November 4, 2014. Voters were required to register by October 14, 2014, to vote in the election.[4][5]

Campaign finance

No contributions or expenditures were reported during the election as of October 17, 2014, according to the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission.[6] Candidates were not required to declare their contributions unless they exceeded $4,500.00. The last campaign finance report before the election was due on October 24, 2014, and the final report was due on November 24, 2014.

NJM ranking

The magazine New Jersey Monthly ranked 339 New Jersey high schools in 2012 and 2014. The analysis for the report was conducted by the research company Leflein Associates. The report weighted school environment at 1, student performance at 1.5, and student outcomes at 2.1.[7] Vineland Senior High School was ranked 297th in 2012. The school rose by more than 30 positions to 264th in the 2014 rankings.[8]
