William H. "John" McKamey was a Democratic candidate for Governor of Tennessee in the 2014 elections.[1]

Biography and career

McKamey was born and raised in Sullivan County, Tennessee. He attended Mary Hughes High School, then Milligan College and earned a master's degree from East Tennessee State University. Afterwards, McKamey served as an educator and athletics coach in the Sullivan County School System. He was a member of the Governor’s Alliance on Physical Fitness and is a former President of the Upper East Tennessee Baseball Coach’s Association. He was honored as Coach of the Year several times during his career. The McKamey Baseball Field at Sullivan East High School in Bluff City Tennessee is named in his honor.

In 1975, McKamey joined the Sullivan County Commission. He became Sullivan County Mayor in 1990. After his term as mayor ended, he rejoined the Sullivan County Commission in 2000 and remained a part of it until 2010. During his term as County Mayor, McKamey established the Sullivan County Recycling Program. McKamey has also served as a Director of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, President of the Piney Flats Community Chest, President of the Piney Flats Ruritan Club, a member of the Board of Directors of the Rocky Mountain Museum and a member of the Piney Flats Historical Society. McKamey also helps to promote regional growth as a member of the Tri City Airport Commission.[2]

McKamey ran for election to the office of Governor of Tennessee. McKamey did not win the Democratic nomination in the primary on August 7. The general election took place on November 4, 2014.[1]
