Three seats on the Williamsville Central School District Board of Education were up for general election on May 19, 2015. The election shared the ballot with the school district's annual budget vote, which was approved by voters.[1][2]

The seats held by incumbents Michael Littman, Jay Smith and Toni Vazquez were on the ballot.[3] They ran against four challengers, Sam Alba, Robert Campo, Shawn P. Lemay and Mark Mecca, in this election.[4] Vazquez won re-election to the board, and challengers Shawn P. Lemay and Mark Mecca were elected to the other two seats.[5]

Williamsville Central School District is located in Erie County in western New York. The county seat is Buffalo. Erie County was home to 919,866 residents in 2013, according to the United States Census Bureau.[6] During the 2012-2013 school year, Williamsville Central was the 14th-largest school district in New York and served 10,239 students.[7]

Demographics

Erie County underperformed in comparison to the rest of New York in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 30.9 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 33.2 percent for New York as a whole. The median household income in Erie County was $50,653, compared to $58,003 statewide. The poverty rate was 14.6 percent, compared to 15.3 percent for the entire state.[6]

Voter and candidate information

The Williamsville Central Board of Education consists of nine members elected at large to three-year terms on a staggered basis every year in May. Three members are up for election each year, and voters can vote for all three seats. The three candidates who receive the most votes in the election are considered elected to the board.[3] There was no primary election, and the general election was held on May 19, 2015.[1]

School board candidates must be at least 18 years old, U.S. citizens, residents of the district for a minimum of one year prior to the election and able to read and write. To get on the ballot, candidates had to file nominating petitions containing 51 signatures with the district clerk by April 20, 2015.[9]

The Williamsville Teachers' Association endorsed incumbent Toni Vazquez and challengers Shawn P. Lemay and Mark Mecca.[10]
