A measure to ban teaching standard German (High German) to kindergarteners was on the ballot in the Canton of Zurich in Switzerland on May 15, 2011. The measure was approved.

Under the measure, Swiss German was to be taught instead. The Local reported that proponents said "learning standard German as toddlers did not prove to pave the way for better grades at school," and that "[it is] beneficial for foreign kids growing up in Switzerland, who can then integrate better into Swiss society."[1]
