The Washington "Definition of Marriage" Initiative, did not make the November 2012 statewide ballot in Washington as an Initiative to the People.
The proposed measure would have defined marriage as between one man and one woman.[1]
The proposal was filed with the Washington Secretary of State as the state legislature considered SB 6239. The bill is supported by Gov. Christine Gregoire. The bill, sponsored by state Sen. Ed Murray (D) and Rep. Jamie Pedersen (D), provides "equal protection for all families in Washington by creating equality in civil marriage and changing the domestic partnership laws, while protecting religious freedom."[2][3] On February 1, 2012 the Washington State Senate voted 28-21 in favor of the proposed bill.[4]

In order to qualify for the ballot, supporters were required to submit a minimum of 241,153 valid signatures by July 6, 2012.
