The Sales Tax Reduction Initiative is an initiated state statute proposed for the Idaho ballot on November 8, 2016.
The measure would reduce the state sales tax from 6 percent to 5 percent. It would also change the definition of "sale" to include sales of services, computer software, contracts and other specified goods.[1]

| “ | An initiative relating to taxation; reducing sales tax rate from six percent (6%) to five percent (5%); amending definition of "sale" to include sales of services, computer software and digital goods, and contracts for installing, improving or repairing tangible personal property and real property; removing exemption for labor or services related to property installation; removing many sales tax exemptions, including: interstate trucks, out-of-state contracts, research and development equipment, glider kit vehicles, beverage and food samples, funeral caskets, precious metal bullion, Idaho commemorative silver medallions, labor on new manufactured homes or modular buildings, telecommunications equipment, computer software and digital goods, INL research and development purchases, sales to or purchases by canal companies, centers for independent living, motor vehicle purchases by family members, sales by 4-H and FFA clubs at fairs, sales through vending machines, auto manufacturer rebates, senior citizen centers; applying sales tax to new categories of services, including: construction, transportation, information, repair, professional, business, personal, social, media measurement, and miscellaneous services, lottery tickets, pari-mutuel betting, and nonprofit shooting range fees; and removing property tax exemption on custom computer programs, rebates for retail developers making substantial transportation improvements, and rebates under small employer incentive act of 2005.[2] | ” |

Path to the ballot
Supporters had to gather 47,623 valid signatures by April 30, 2016, to qualify the initiative for the ballot.
The number of signatures required is equal to 6 percent of the registered voters as of the last general election in each of at least 18 legislative districts. Since there was a general election in November 2014, the signature requirements for initiatives in 2016 were determined by 2014 results.
