Recall

In August 2014, a group seeking to remove Sherwood from office began gathering signatures for a recall petition. The group argued that Sherwood had too often voted contrary to his campaign platform since he first joined the council in January 2013.[2]

The recall group disapproved of Sherwood's support for the construction of the West Valley Casino and Resort, a multimillion dollar casino and resort in Glendale owned by the Tohono O'odham Nation.

The Glendale City Council voted four to three in favor of the casino in August 2014. Sherwood was one of the four council members who voted for the casino, despite the fact that he campaigned against it in 2012.[3]

Regarding his vote in August, Sherwood said, "I campaigned against the casino, I’ve never hid from that. It should be an attribute that once you learn more about something, you should be able to change your opinion, and I’m proud of that. I’ve done what I feel what the right thing was for the city."[2]

On December 19, 2014, the recall group submitted over 6000 signatures to the Office of the Glendale City Clerk. The city required 2,751 signatures to trigger a recall election. [4] On December 24, 2014, however, the city clerk's office declared all 6,000 signatures invalid, citing the group's failure to comply with city laws that govern the circulation of recall petitions.[5]

The recall effort was restarted on February 23, 2015.[6] This time, the clerk's office verified the signatures and deemed them sufficient. A recall election for Sherwood's seat took place on November 3, 2015.[7] Ray Malnar defeated Sherwood in the recall election.[8]
