Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

Amy Jensen is a retired 31-year public school teacher. Throughout her career, Amy has been a strong advocate for public education. Kansas educators elected her to serve on the National Education Association's Board of Directors where she lobbied for Kansas students, educators, and public education on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Amy believes that all kids deserve to have a future-ready education in USD 259 to prepare them for a fulfilling, productive life. She understands it takes the community to provide what our students need to be successful. Currently Amy is adjunct faculty teaching reading at Butler Community College.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

The core responsibilities of a school board member center on governance, not day-to-day management. A good board member serves as a representative of the community while making decisions that support student success.

What is the primary job of a school board member in your view?

1. Establish a clear mission and vision for the district focused on student achievement.

2. Approve and oversee the district budget, making sure taxpayer dollars are used effectively and transparently.

3. Hire, support, and evaluate the superintendent, who manages the district’s daily operations.

4. Create and update policies that address curriculum, safety, attendance, technology use, and other key areas.

5. Act as a bridge between the district and the community, listening to families, staff, and stakeholders.

6. Monitor progress toward district goals using data on student achievement and other performance metrics and hold the district accountable for outcomes while celebrating successes.
