Rockdale County Public Schools is a school district in Georgia that served 15,608 students during the 2011-2012 school year.[1] District schools have earned distinctions from state education officials including a 2012 Georgia School of Excellence award for Pine Street Elementary School and a 2011 Silver for Highest Performance for Lorraine Elementary School. The Rockdale Magnet School for Science and Technology was also the first high school in Georgia to receive STEM certification.[2]

Rockdale County Public Schools is located in Rockdale County, Georgia. The county seat of Rockdale County is Conyers. Rockdale County was home to 86,919 residents in 2013, according to the United States Census Bureau.[3] The district was the 22nd-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year.

Demographics

Rockdale County underperformed in comparison to the state of Georgia in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 25.0 percent of Rockdale County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 27.8 percent for Georgia as a whole. The median household income in Rockdale County was $54,704, compared to $49,604 for the state of Georgia. The poverty rate in Rockdale County was 13.9 percent, compared to 17.4 percent for the entire state.[3]

The superintendent of Rockdale County Public Schools is Richard Autry as of June 27, 2014. He has served in the position since his appointment in June 2012. Autry previously served as the district's chief academic officer of teaching and learning from 2008 to 2012.[4]

Members of the board are elected to four-year terms on a staggered basis. Two seats were up for election on May 20, 2014. Five seats were on the ballot in May 2016.

Academic performance

The Georgia Department of Education administers annual tests to students in grades three through eight called the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT). These tests assess the proficiency of district students in five academic subjects including reading, English language arts (ELA), math, science and social studies. The CRCTs are designed to measure progress by students in topics covered by the Common Core State Standards. A student meets state proficiency goals with a score of 800 and exceeds state proficiency goals with a score of 850 or higher.
