Candidate Connection

Alonzo Pennington participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on April 11, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Alonzo Pennington's responses follow below.[3]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Jobs

2) Healthcare
3) Infrastructure[4][5]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

Good and affordable healthcare should be a right and not just a privilege. I also believe that education is the backbone of what will bring in jobs, so we must make sure we are funding it properly.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[5]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Alonzo Pennington answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

I look up to my father and grandfather who have taught me through example what it's like to be a good public servant, and what it's like to fight for the working class people. Also, my favorite President, FDR. Roosevelt's New Deal is what saved this country from economic crisis and complete failure. He saved our country by looking out for the middle class and the working people.[5]
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?
FDR's "Second Bill of Rights".[5]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
To accurately resemble the ideals of, and serve the the people they are elected to represent.[5]
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I'm a KY native who loves our district. I've been here my entire life. I've seen the up sides, and not just the bad. I know what we can become once again. I'm an open book who's ears and office doors will always be open to my constituents.[5]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
To listen to the wants and needs of the people of the district. I believe the representative should be ready to fight for funding so we can have the resources we need to meet our goals.[5]
What legacy would you like to leave?
I want people to say, "Alonzo cared about the people. He always fought hard to get us the jobs we need, he made sure we had the funding to rebuild our infrastructure, and he stood up for the working people and made sure they had a seat at the table".[5]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
I was 7 years old when the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded. We watched all day long and thought of the astronauts on board and their families. I remember crying and praying for the kids that were left behind by their parents and a teacher.[5]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
I've been a performing musician since I was 7 years old. I've been in front of an audience nearly all my life.[5]
What do you perceive to be the United States’ greatest challenges as a nation over the next decade?
Pulling ourselves out of this financial crisis and creating jobs across the country. Rebuilding our crumbling roads and bridges. Making sure all Americans have healthcare. Also, making sure our veterans are left out in the cold when the come home from duty.[5]
If you are not a current representative, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
I'd like to be on the "Ways and Means" committee. I believe this would be the best place for me to serve so I can work on our infrastructure here at home. "Energy and Commerce" and "Education and the Workforce". I believe these would be best so I could server the working people.[5]
