Gov. John Bel Edwards (R) appointed Harris as the Louisiana Secretary of Natural Resources on January 29, 2016.[1]

Harris served in the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality for nearly a decade. During his time there, Harris developed the state standards for the evaluation of regulated sites. Prior to being appointed secretary of the department of natural resources, Harris was the administrator of the technology assessment division in the Department of Natural Resources.[1]
