Bettye Davis
Bettye Davis was the Seat A representative on the Anchorage School District School Board in Alaska from 2013 to 2018. Davis resigned September 24, 2018, for health reasons. She died on December 3, 2018.[1][2]
While the school board is nonpartisan, Davis previously served as a Democratic member of the Alaska State Senate, representing District K from 2001 to 2013. She also served in the Alaska House of Representatives from 1990-1996. During this time, she served as both the majority and minority whip.
Biography
Davis earned her bachelor's degree in social work from Gambling University in 1971. Upon her retirement from the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services, she served on the Anchorage school board for 11 years. She also served on the state board of education. In 1990, she was elected to the Alaska House of Representatives. In 2000, she became the first African-American to be elected to the Alaska State Senate. During her time in the state legislature, Davis served on the following committees:[3]

Elections
2016
Two of the seven seats on the Anchorage School District school board were up for general election on April 5, 2016. While members of the board are elected at large, they run for specified seats. Incumbent Bettye Davis faced challenger Brent Hughes for Seat A. Seat B incumbent Eric Croft did not file to run for re-election. Challengers David Nees, Starr Marsett, and Kay Schuster competed for Croft's seat. Davis defeated Hughes for Seat A, and Marsett won out for Seat B.[4][5]

Funding
Davis reported $8,564.00 in contributions and $1,483.82 in expenditures to the Alaska Public Offices Commission, which left her campaign with $7,080.18 on hand during the election.[6]

Davis received no official endorsements for her campaign during the election.

Davis ran for re-election in the 2012 election for Alaska State Senate District 13 (M). She defeated Harry Crawford, Jr. in the August 28, 2012 Democratic primary and was defeated by Anna Fairclough (R) in the general election, which took place on November 6, 2012.[7][8][9]

In 2008, Davis was re-elected to the Alaska State Senate, District K. Davis finished with 7,729 votes (56.80%) while her opponent Dave Harbour finished with 5,852 votes (43.00%).[10] Davis raised $84,636 for her campaign fund.[11]
