Four of five seats on the Fairfield City School District Board of Education in Ohio were up for at-large general election on November 7, 2017. One of these seats was up for special election to complete an unexpired term.[1] All four incumbents filed to retain their seats, including appointed member Carrie O'Neal, who won an unopposed election for the two-year seat. At-large incumbents Dan Hare, Michael Berding, and Brian Begley all won their re-election bids unopposed.[2]

Voter and candidate information
The Fairfield City School District Board of Education consists of five members elected to four-year terms. Board member terms began on the first day of January following the election.[3] All members represent the district at-large. Three four-year terms and one two-year term were up for election on November 7, 2017.
Candidates had to be 18 years or older as of November 7, 2017, residents of the district for which they ran, and registered voters in that district.[3] Candidates had to file for this election with the Butler County Board of Elections by August 9, 2017.

Campaign finance
There were two campaign finance deadlines for Ohio school board candidates in 2017:[5]
- The Pre-General was due on October 26, 2017.
- The Post-General was due on December 15, 2017.
All school board candidates whose names appear on the ballot are required to file pre- and post-election reports. A pre-election report is due 12 days before the election if candidates spend or receive $1,000 or more in monetary or in-kind contributions between the time they last filed a report and 20 days before the election. Post-election reports must be filed within 38 days after the election. School board candidates are required to file a semiannual report by the last business day in July if they do not file a post-primary report and they receive $10,000 or more during the semiannual reporting period.[6]

Fairfield City School District is located in southwestern Ohio in Butler County. The county seat is Hamilton. The county was home to an estimated 377,537 residents from 2010 to 2016, according to the United States Census Bureau.[7] The district was the 19th-largest school district in the state in the 2014-2015 school year and served 9,875 students.[8]
Demographics
Butler County overperformed in comparison to the rest of Ohio in terms of higher education achievement from 2011 to 2015. The United States Census Bureau found that 28.4 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 26.1 percent of state residents. The median household income in Butler County was $57,540, while it was $49,429 for Ohio. The county poverty rate was 14.4 percent, compared to the state's 14.6 percent.[7]
