Five seats on the Minneapolis Public Schools Board of Education were up for primary election on August 12, 2014. The general election was held on November 4, 2014.
Incumbent Rebecca Gagnon ran against six challengers to retain her at-large seat. Two newcomers, Nelson Inz and Jay Larson, competed for the District 5 seat. District 1 incumbent Jenny Arneson and District 3 newcomer Siad Ali ran unopposed to win their seats.[1] In addition to Arneson and Ali, Gagnon and challenger Don Samuels won the two at-large seats, and Inz won the District 5 seat.

Minneapolis Public Schools is located in Hennepin County, Minnesota. The county seat of Hennepin County is Minneapolis. Hennepin County had a population of 1,184,576 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau in 2013.[2] In the 2011-2012 school year, Minneapolis Public Schools was the third-largest school district in Minnesota and served 35,046 students.[3]
Demographics
In 2013, Hennepin County had a higher percentage of residents with a bachelor's degree compared to the state overall. The United States Census Bureau reported that 45.8 percent of residents aged 25 and older in Hennepin County had earned a bachelor's degree, compared with 32.6 percent for Minnesota. The county’s median household income was $64,403, above the state median of $59,836. The poverty rate in Hennepin County was 12.8 percent, slightly above the state rate of 11.5 percent.[2]

Voter and candidate information
As of the 2014 election, the Minneapolis Board of Education consisted of nine members elected to four-year terms either at-large or by a specific geographic district. The primary election was held on August 12, 2014, and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. Five seats, two at-large and three by district, were up for election in 2014.[1]
School board candidates had to file with their county elections department during the candidate filing period. The filing period began May 20, 2014, and ended June 3, 2014. To vote in the 2014 general election, voters had to register by October 14, 2014.[5][6]

Endorsements
The Minneapolis Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party endorsed incumbent Rebecca Gagnon and challenger Iris Altamirano for the two at-large seats, unopposed incumbent Jenny Arneson for the District 1 seat, unopposed candidate Siad Ali for the District 3 seat and newcomer Nelson Inz for the District 5 seat.[7] Although the Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation did not endorse any candidates, it did state in its internal newsletter that members should support the candidates endorsed by the Minneapolis DFL.[8]
Gagnon also received endorsements from WomenWinning and multiple state and local officials listed here.[9]
The Service Employees International Union Minnesota State Council endorsed Altamirano.[10]
The Star Tribune endorsed Altamirano and fellow newcomer Don Samuels for the two at-large seats and Inz for the District 5 seat.[11]
The New Progressive Alliance endorsed Doug Mann for an at-large seat in the primary election.[12]
Campaign finance
Candidates reported a total of $184,257.90 in contributions and $186,542.69 in expenditures during the election, according to the Hennepin County Elections office.[13] State law does not require campaign finance reporting if contributions or expenditures do not exceed $750 in a calendar year.[14]
In the at-large race, candidates reported $151,271.54 in contributions and $153,728.99 in expenditures during the election.
