Three seats on the Tyler Independent School District board were up for general election on May 10, 2014. In the District 2 race, incumbent Orenthia Mason triumphed over challenger Cedrick Granberry Sr. In the District 5 race, challenger Barbara Smith unseated incumbent Ross Strader to finish out a term that expires in May 2015. District 4 candidate Patricia Nation was elected automatically because she was unopposed.[1]

Tyler Independent School District is located in Smith County, Texas. The county seat of Smith County is Tyler. The county's population was 209,714 according to the 2010 U.S. Census.[2]
Demographics
Smith County underperforms in comparison to the rest of Texas in terms of higher education attainment and median income and outperforms in terms of poverty rate. The 2010 U.S. Census found that 24.8 percent of Smith County residents over 25 years old held undergraduate degrees compared to a 26.3 percent rate for the state of Texas. Smith County had a median income of $47,312 in 2010 compared to $51,563 for Texas. The poverty rate for Smith County was 15.9 percent in 2010 compared to a 17.4 percent rate for the rest of the state.[2]

Voter and candidate information
The Tyler Board of Trustees consists of seven members who are elected by geographic district. They serve three-year terms. There was no primary election and a general election took place on May 10, 2014 for three seats, including one unfinished term in District 5. The District 5 term expires in May 2015, along with one other seat.[3]
A member of the board must be 18 years old, a U.S. citizen and a resident of the district. An individual seeking office must be a resident of the state for 12 months and a resident of the district for six months, prior to the last date on which the candidate could file to be listed on the ballot.[4]

No candidate filed a campaign finance report with the Texas Ethics Commission.[5]
What was at stake?
Two district seats were contested in the May 2014 election in Tyler Independent School District, including the unexpired District 5 term. Ross Strader was appointed to that position in December 2013 after the resignation of board member Brad Spradlin. Strader was defeated by former TISD teacher Barbara Smith. District 2 incumbent and Board President Orenthia Mason defeated Cedrick Granberry Sr., a business owner.
Issues in the district
2013 bond proposal
The Tyler community approved a $160.5 million bond package in May 2013. The bond approval allocated funds for the construction of four new facilities, including two middle schools. The bond package also included renovations and additions to two existing elementary schools. The bond measure did not increase the taxes of Tyler residents.[6]
