J. Carlton Cole (Democratic Party) was a judge for Judicial District 1 of the North Carolina 1st Superior Court Division. He assumed office in 2009. He left office on March 31, 2021.

Cole (Democratic Party) ran for re-election for the Judicial District 1 judge of the North Carolina 1st Superior Court Division. He won in the general election on November 6, 2018.

Cole was appointed to the court in October 2009 by former Governor Bev Perdue (D).[1] He retired on March 31, 2021, when he reached the mandatory retirement age of 72.[2]

The North Carolina Superior Courts are split into five divisions and 48 districts. Superior court judges rotate among the districts within their division every six months.[3] However, superior court judges are elected by voters in their district and must reside in the district in which they are elected.[4]

Education

Cole received his undergraduate degree from Livingstone College, his master's degree in criminal justice from North Carolina Central University, and his J.D. from the North Carolina Central University School of Law.[1][5]

Career

Cole previously served as a district court judge for the 1st Judicial District. He also worked as an attorney in private practice in Perquimans County and served as the chairman of the 1st Congressional District Democratic Party.[1]
