This page contains a table listing the largest share of the vote of all time for Democratic and Republican gubernatorial candidates running in contested elections in each state.[1] It is updated following each November election and was last updated after the 2025 election.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The largest share of the vote for a Democratic gubernatorial candidate in a contested election was M. Hoke Smith's 99.8% in Georgia's 1906 gubernatorial election, followed by Coleman Blease's 99.8% in South Carolina's 1910 gubernatorial election.
  • The largest share of the vote for a Republican gubernatorial candidate in a contested election was Earl Warren's 91.6% in California's 1946 gubernatorial election.
  • The largest share of the vote for a major-party gubernatorial candidate running in a contested election was for a Democrat in 28 states and a Republican in 22.
