Biography

Merkley was born in Myrtle Creek, Oregon. He earned a bachelor's degree from Stanford University and a master's degree from Princeton. His political career began in 1998 when he won election to the Oregon House of Representatives. He served as a representative from 1999 until his election to the U.S. Senate in 2008.[1][2]

Merkley won re-election in the 2014 election for the U.S. Senate, representing Oregon.[7] He defeated Monica Wehby (R), Mike Montchalin (L), James Leuenberger (Constitution) and Christina Jean Lugo (Pacific Green).[7][8] He won the Democratic nomination in the primary on May 20, 2014. He defeated Pavel Goberman and William Bryk.[9] He also ran as an Independent candidate, Working Families Party candidate and a Progressive candidate.[10][11] The general election took place on November 4, 2014.
