The Compliance and Accountability Committee was a standing committee of the Michigan State Senate. The four-member committee was created in November 2013.[1]

Function

The rules of the Senate and House do not describe the jurisdiction of the individual standing committees except that all Senate bills involving an appropriation must be referred either directly to the appropriations committee or to an appropriate standing committee and then to the appropriations committee. Traditionally, the assignment of bills follows topical lines.[2]

A release from the office of founding chair Arlan Meekhof (R) described the committee as being "created to examine the implementation and application of laws passed by the Legislature and signed by Gov. Rick Snyder. This committee will also focus on instances in which the rights of individuals are being affected due to laws being violated or potentially misinterpreted."[1]

The committee was seen by those on both sides of the right-to-work issue as being formed with the intent to investigate the Michigan Education Association over limitations on membership withdrawals.[3][4][5]
