CARSON CITY: Nevada: There are 54 total legislative seats with 2012 elections in Nevada, where polling places are open from 7:00AM to 7:00PM Pacific Time.[1]
Both chambers are considered by Ballotpedia to be game-changers, meaning partisan control could swing in 2012.
Of the 54 incumbents up for election in 2012, 38 (70.4%) of them are running for re-election. A total of 44 of 54 (81.5%) districts will see more than one major party candidate in the general election.
Here are a few races to watch:
Senate
- In District 5, Joyce Woodhouse (D) and Steve Kirk (R) will vie to replace outgoing incumbent Shirley Breeden (D).
- In District 6, Benny Yerushalmi (D) and Mark Hutchison (R) will vie to replace outgoing incumbent Allison Copening (D).
- In District 9, Mari Nakashima St. Martin (R) and Justin C. Jones (D) will run for a two-year term to replace Elizabeth Halseth (R), who resigned in February 2012.
- In District 11, Michael Schneider (Nevada) was ineligible to run due to term limits. Democrat Aaron D. Ford will face Republican John Drake in the November 6 general election.
- In District 19, Dean Rhoads was ineligible to run due to term limits. In the general election, Harley Z. Kulkin (D), Pete Goicoechea (R), and Janine Hansen (I) will face-off.
Assembly
- In District 4, Kenneth C. Evans (D), Michele Fiore (R), and Jonathan J. Hansen (Independent American) are running to replace Richard McArthur, the Republican incumbent running for Senate District 18.
- In District 9, Andrew Martin (D) and C. Kelly Hurst (R) are running to replace Richard "Tick" Segerblom (D); the race turned controversial with Hurst challenging Martin's residency.
- In District 19, Felipe Rodriguez (D) and District 20 incumbent Cresent Hardy are running for the seat of Steven Brooks (D), who himself is running in District 17 because of redistricting.
