Noteworthy events
Corruption scandal
On March 10, 2011, Kruger surrendered to federal authorities after being charged with corruption as the result of an FBI investigation. The 53-page criminal complaint detailed two schemes Kruger was allegedly involved in. Charges were also filed against state Assemblyman William Boyland and six others.[3]
The first scheme accused David Rosen of MediSys Health Systems and Robert Aquino of Parkway Hospital of allegedly trying to bribe Kruger in return for getting a proposed merger passed. Additionally, Rosen was accused of giving Boyland a no-show job for his role in the deal.[4]
The second scheme accused Kruger of "receiving a stream of bribes totaling at least $1 million in exchange for taking official actions."[3] It alleged that Kruger shared fees paid to lobbyist Richard Lipsky, as well as taking bribes to block a big-box store in Brooklyn and extend liquor store hours.
Guilty plea and resignation
On December 20, 2011, Kruger pleaded guilty to four of the five counts against him. Just prior to his guilty plea, he submitted his resignation from the New York State Senate. Kruger faced up to 50 years in prison. He was sentenced to seven years in prison, two years of supervised release, and a $223,534 fine on April 26, 2012.[5][6]
