Nicholas Kunkel
Nicholas Kunkel was a 2014 Libertarian candidate for District 42-Position 1 of the Washington House of Representatives.[1]
Campaign themes
2014
Kunkel's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[2]
Campaign Finance and Representation
- Excerpt: "I believe that our "representatives" by and large no longer represent the populace that is their constituency. This is due to the fact that they accept donations from corporations and special interests, often from outside their legislative districts. In order to represent in good faith I feel that no representative politician should be able to solicit, nor accept, any donation or contribution in dollars, favors, or gifts from anybody other than an individual from within their district. Even in these circumstances, I believe that individual's ability to influence should be severely limited so as not to hold sway over the opinion of a representative."
Expression and the Press
- Excerpt: "I do not believe that the legislature should be involved in any way to interfere with a person's ability to express themselves in any way they see fit. I oppose censorship of all kinds and feel that it is up to the individual to choose for themselves what media are appropriate for them."
Privacy
- Excerpt: "The fourth amendment clearly guarantees that we have the right to be secure in our persons. I believe that privacy, particularly in one's home, is a necessity for all citizens and that our government should have no need to interfere with the security we have in ourselves."
Adults Relationships and Contact with one Another
- Excerpt: "Legal, consenting adults should have the ability to enter into any agreement they see fit regardless of gender, race, religion, or other characteristic particular to an individual."
Abortion
- Excerpt: "Abortion is an issue in which many diverse arguments can be logically made, and thus I believe that the decision for one to engage in the practice is so personal that it should be up to the individuals involved and not the state. The state should have no involvement whatsoever in the practice or debate of such a personal issue."
Second Amendment/Militias/Firearms
- Excerpt: "I believe that the second amendment comes hand in hand with the fourth in order to ensure we are all secure in our persons. Individuals should be able to secure themselves through means determined by the individual. The second amendment should allow for the states to maintain militias. Individuals or groups should be allowed to maintain militias only for the common defense, utilizing the non-aggression principle."
