William Aila
William Aila was the Hawaii Chairperson of Land and Natural Resources. Aila assumed office on November 29, 2010. Aila left office on December 1, 2014.
Aila ran for election for an at-large seat of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. Aila lost in the general election on November 6, 2018.
Aila is the former Chairperson of Land and Natural Resources in Hawaii. He was appointed on November 29, 2010, by incoming Governor Neil Abercrombie. He served as interim director until his confirmation by the Hawaii State Senate in early 2011.[1] Aila's term ended on December 1, 2014, and he was not reappointed.
Biography
Aila was born in Waianae and earned a B.A. in general tropical agriculture from the University of Hawaii. Before becoming chairperson, Aila was Waianae, HI Boat Harbor Harbormaster.[2] Aila was held in contempt of court in 2005 for his involvement with Hui Malama I Na Kupuna 'O Hawaii Nei, an organization that seeks to rebury Native Hawaiian possesions and remians. Aila was a board member at a time when the group was accused of borrowing items from th Bishop Museum and not returning them. The group refused to return the items.[3]
He worked for the Department of Land and Natural Resources for more than 23 years in the Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation.[2]

Political career
Hawaii Chairman of Land and Natural resources (2010-2014)
Aila was the Natural Resources Chairman for the state of Hawaii until December 2014. He was appointed to the statewide position by Gov. Abercrombie upon his election in 2010, and confirmed for the appointment the following February.[4] The chairperson heads the Hawaii Board of Land and Natural Resources, a seven-person state body responsible for conserving and managing Hawaii's natural resources and the exploitation thereof. The chairperson is the board's executive, and directly manages the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources, the agency responsible for implementing the board's policies.

2010
In Dec. 2010, Aila was appointed Chairman of the Hawaii Board of Land and Natural Resources by then-newly elected governor Neil Abercrombie (D). Like all Hawaii state executives, the chairperson is appointed by the governor with the consent of the state Senate, which Aila received in early 2011 following his appointment.
2006
Aila ran for Governor of Hawaii in 2006, but he lost in the Democratic primaries.[5]
