Campaign themes

2016

The following issues were listed on Sackrin's campaign website. For a full list of campaign themes, click here.

  • Climate Change: South Florida is already feeling the impacts of global warming, and there is no more debating it: we need to take smart, aggressive action on climate change. Defiant Republicans, beholden to the fossil fuel industry and obsessed with oil and “fracking,” refuse to accept the scientific community’s consensus and take necessary steps to combat this existential crisis. We cannot wait any longer, we need to save the planet right now.
  • Restore Democracy: Our representative democracy is in crisis. Big-moneyed interests have compromised our elected officials, and social and environmental progress is often blocked as a result. The House of Representatives is the body closest to the people, and members are elected to advocate for the needs of their district. When that body is no longer responsive to the needs of the many, but only the needs of the few (the very few wealthy campaign donors, funding their reelection campaigns), democracy has been compromised.
  • Equal Rights: The American people of today are vibrant, diverse, and tolerant. The kind of bigotry and ignorance we see from some elected officials can no longer be acceptable. We are moving forward, making progress, and we have work to do. Every person is guaranteed the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and no human being is illegal.
  • End Federal Marijuana Prohibition: A plant with medicinal and therapeutic qualities, which at least the last 3 U.S. Presidents have admitted to illicitly using, remains banned at the federal level, labeled a “controlled substance” alongside heroin and deadly narcotics. Big Alcohol has been in the wallets and in the ears of our elected officials for years, but now they’re not lobbying against bootleggers & Prohibition; they know marijuana has potential to become a huge industry, and they don’t want any more competition.
  • Criminal Justice Reform: Privatized prisons and mass incarceration from the failed War on Drugs have resulted in a tremendous waste of human capital and silenced votes. It’s time for sensible drug policies that treat drug addiction as a public health issue rather than a crime.
