A campaign to recall City Councilwoman Amy Hoogstraet ended when Hoogstraet resigned in September 2022.[1]
Recall supporters
The recall petition alleged that Hoogstraet had "undermined the legitimate authority of the City Administrator, emailed apparent orders and directives to employees ... and interfered with legitimate administrations of City functions."[1]
Recall opponents
Hoogstraet said that the grounds for recall stated in the petition were not given in good faith. She said that organizers actually wanted to recall her because of her progressive political views, and in particular, her work advocating for LGBTQ youth at the Springfield Glo Center. She told the Springfield News-Leader that the petition was "manufactured BS designed to try to legitimize the recall that they've been clamoring for since the moment I was elected."[1]
Hoogstraet said that she had never given orders to city employees, but had once suggested in an email that the city could have better advertised a blood drive. "Was that an overstep? Probably. Was that giving an order and trying to usurp the city administrator's authority? I don't think so, and that certainly wasn't my intention. And if someone thinks it was, and that's why I'm being recalled, then that's pretty ridiculous."[1]
Explaining her resignation, Hoogstraet said, "Any satisfaction or effectiveness I previously felt has long since been overshadowed by all of the aforementioned hate, vitriol, misinformation, and defamation that I experience on a constant basis."[1]
