|This post is more than a volunteer position for me. I have dedicated my life to improving the lives of LA County residents by increasing their access to quality higher education. For over twenty-three years, I have served students at Glendale Community College, overseeing the Career and Transfer Centers. In this job, I have helped hundreds of students successfully complete their degree and facilitated the launch of their careers with job placement services.
I attended Los Angeles Valley College, received my bachelor's degree in Liberal Studies from Antioch University, and earned a master's degree in Public Administration from California State University, Northridge. I am also an adjunct professor at Glendale Community College in the Political Science Department where I teach classes in California and American Government. I grew up in Van Nuys, California and still live in the San Fernando Valley where I raised my two now grown children.- Support students during COVID19 and ensure that the district is prepared with plan for a safe return to campuses.
- Ensure that students have the resources and support (computers, internet, food, housing) to successfully complete their goals.
- Ensure transparency and fiscal accountability for the 5 million constituents that make up the LA Community College District.
I am passionate about ensuring that all students regardless of their socio-economic status, race, gender or ethnicity have an opportunity to achieve their educational and career goals. I firmly believe that we need to bring the "community" back into community colleges and serve those that are parents (35% of our current students), displaced workers, returning adults as well as recent high school graduates.
My daughter is the strongest woman I know. She's thoughtful and kind, but at the same time stands up to the patriarchy and challenges systems, authority and rules. She's smart, confident and truly believes in human rights, equity and equality. She fights for herself in the workplace, and she is unapologetic. She paid for her own college education (well, she's paying off student loans) . Her generation as well as the younger generations are changing the world in ways I never would have imagined.
When I was a little girl my mother marched with Another Mother For Peace, and I had a patches for my jeans and carried a sign that read: "War Is Not Healthy For Children & Other Living Things".
"Another Mother for Peace is a grass-roots anti-war advocacy group founded in 1967 in opposition to the U.S. war in Vietnam. The association is "dedicated to eliminating the use of war as a means of solving disputes among nations, people and ideologies."
I also serve as the Second Vice President of the Community College League of California Trustee Board where I advocate on a statewide basis for 115 community colleges and 2.1 million community college students.
As the current President of the Board, I have fought tirelessly to improve the quality of education and secure more funding to ensure access for all who wish to attend.
